Description
Notes Cranberry, Navel Orange, Tamarind Candy Origin Nyeri, Kenya Varieties SL 28, SL 34 Elevation 1800 MASL Process Washed We’re excited to be bringing Kenyan coffees back to our menu for the 2026 season and this inaugural selection from Gaturiri showcases a satisfying balance of piquant fruit flavors and deep brown sugar sweetness. This lot is comprised exclusively of the prized SL-28 and SL-34 varieties and was just air freighted to us as the recent harvest wrapped up to ensure its arrival at peak freshness. We’re getting a lively and juicy cup with notes of red berries and citrus anchored with a candy-like sweetness. The Gaturiri factory has been in operation for 50 years and with an emphasis on methodical processing and long, slow drying they have consistently produced coffee of outstanding quality. Lots from Gaturiri always begin with deliveries of ripe coffee fruit from around 1,100 small producers in the area. First, the coffee is pulped to remove the outer layer and floated in water to remove defects before being transferred to tanks for an initial 24 hour fermentation stage. Then the coffee is washed and sent to a secondary fermentation tank for another 12-24 hours before being floated, sorted and washed again. What remains is clean, dense lots of coffee that will be moved to soaking tanks to sit under water for as long as another 24 hours. The coffee is gently dried under shade for the first day or so to wick away the surface moisture before being distributed in a thin layer on raised beds to fully dry for 10 to 15 days.
