Tasting notes: Margarita Lime, Citrus, Green Grape Juan Peña is a pioneer of coffee cultivation in Ecuador’s Saraguro region, where Hacienda La Papaya combines exclusive varieties with agronomy-led production and technologies such as drip irrigation. The farm exported its first harvest in 2014 and has since earned repeated international recognition. This is September’s third year featuring Peña and his Typica Mejorado. Grown in Loja at 1,800 to 2,200 metres and processed as a washed lot, the coffee is clean, sweet, and memorable. Juicy lime recalls a margarita, while green grape, delicate florals, and sparkling citrus add lift and definition. Typica Mejorado, now understood as a natural cross between Bourbon and an Ethiopian landrace, gives this lot a distinctly elegant expression.
