Description

We are donating 50% of all proceeds of the sale of this coffee to the International Rescue Committee, to forward their ongoing earthquake rescue and aid efforts in Colombia. Thanks for your support in this! Cost per 250mL serving - $2.25 We’ve been asked many a time when we’d be dropping some chirosos, and until now hadn’t quite found one that hit the mark; this washed chiroso from Nelson Urrego of Finca Granito de Oro knocks that mark out of the ballpark for us. You can expect that dominant citrus note—a trademark of chiroso—presented in candied-lemon form here. You should also find deep red, floral iced hibiscus tea in the cup, as well as sweet and mellow dried papaya. Finca Granito de Oro, located at 1.750 masl in Antioquia, Colombia, is a third generational farm, with Nelson continuing the work begun by his father with his own children and his brothers. The farm is 42 hectares in total, of which 12 are planted with coffee trees, and the remaining 30 are untouched forest preserve. The family cultivates three varieties at the moment, chiroso, caturra, and colombia. Short chiroso—commonly referred to as caturra chiroso—is a relatively uncommon variety, grown primarily in the Antioquia region of Colombia, which was rediscovered in the early 2000’s. Its exact provenance remains somewhat opaque, however it has been confirmed to be yet another example of an Ethiopian landrace variety that made its way to Colombia, just like sidra, geisha, mejorada, papayo, pink bourbon, aji and wush wush. With this in mind, containing no caturra genetics, we elect to refer to it as short chiroso, as distinguished from tall chiroso, a related but distinct variety also known as bourbon chiroso (itself containing no bourbon genetics).
