El Obraje, Colombia

High in the mountains of Nariño, near the city of Pasto, Hacienda El Obraje sits at roughly 2,200 meters above sea level. The farm is owned and managed by Pablo Andrés Guerrero, whose family has cared for the property for generations. Coffee was not always the focus at El Obraje. The farm historically produced grains, and later fruit, before Pablo began planting coffee in 2000. At an elevation once considered too cold for productive coffee, he saw an opportunity to explore what was possible in this unique Andean environment. Over the years, Pablo has developed El Obraje into a specialty coffee farm known for its careful cultivation, innovative processing, and experimentation with varieties including Caturra, Castillo, Bourbon, Maracaturra, and Geisha. His background as an architect is reflected in the thoughtful, detail-oriented approach he brings to both the farm and its processing. Pablo opened a cafe and roastery in Pasto that we were honored to visit. The opening of Cafe El Obraje in Pasto was especially memorable to us because we were invited to roast many of the micro lots being brewed those first days. El Obraje has won the Cup of Excellence in Colombia in 2021 and continues to bring elevated, unique coffees. In the past, Elixr has used several different El Obraje micro lots to compete with including Americas Best Espresso, and the United States Barista competition. This coffee is of the Geisha variety, known for its florality, complex flavors and clean finish.
