Farm: El Paraiso The producers at El Paraiso grow excellent coffee and have enormous potential in this area, but for many years they sold their produce to middlemen at very low prices. Furthermore, local ‘coyotes’ promoted the Catimor variety, which, whilst having its advantages, is not suited to the high altitudes of El Paraiso – there, it tends to produce mostly leaves, as it is better adapted to lower altitudes. Producers were also given poor advice on farm management, including pruning and the use of chemical fertilisers and herbicides. However, thanks to the support of our importer, they are now working to address these issues, improve quality and increase production in this area of immense potential. Terroir: Huabal El Paraiso is a village in the district of Huabal, aptly named ‘paradise’ due to its picturesque location atop a small mountain with beautiful views in all directions at an altitude of around 2,000 metres above sea level. Growers in this village mainly cultivate the Caturra, Bourbon and Catimor varieties, often in mixed plantations, on farms situated around the village centre at altitudes ranging from 1,800 to 2,050 metres above sea level.
