About the farm Located in the Kiambu County, the Handege Coffee Factory is a prominent wet mill in Kenya operated by the Ritho Farmers Cooperative Society. It serves as a central processing hub for approximately 1,000 smallholder farmers in the surrounding highlands. Handege is a relatively small factory, with an annual production of about 150 metric tons. The name comes from the Swahili word Ndege, which means aeroplane. The factory sits at an elevation of 1600-1800 masl. It benefits from deep, red volcanic soil and a cool climate, which allows coffee cherries to mature slowly and develop complex sugars. Handege is renowned for its traditional Washed Process. This involves meticulous sorting, pulping, and a dual-stage fermentation process using fresh water from the Gatamaiyu River, followed by sun-drying on raised African beds.Coffee from Handege is celebrated for its vibrant acidity and clean cup quality.
