Description

The Roaster's Select Program program allows us the flexibility to explore beans which don't quite fit into our standard business model, such as experimental fermentations, rare varietals, limited sized lots, and expensive treats. These beans will be available in very limited quantity, only as whole bean, and to keep the price point down and give more people a chance to try them, they will only come in smaller bags. Please bear in mind, I'm not telling you these beans are 3x as tasty or 3x the value as our normal beans, these should be regarded as something interesting to try, or a special treat. The only reason we have these is that Nick wants to play with fun beans. What's in the cup? Amazingly sweet aroma. Notes of cotton candy grapes, lychee, dragonfruit, and kiwi. Will it Spro? So, don’t read too much into the short tbt but give it a very light swirl if it’s draining too fast and clinging to the sides.  I ran standard brews in the V60 and played around with drip assist brews in the Orea.  Pretty much everything was good, so feel free to play around without risking terrible cups.  The drip assist will require a bit finer grind (drop 2 clicks on ZP6) if you want to play with low agitation methods.  All in all this is a very nice natural Gesha that hits a lot of the expected notes.  Grind 4.3 ZP6Temp 93CBrewer V60-01Recipe 4 pour 15g/250g recipe 50/80/70/50 with a 45s bloom, 5-7g/s pours More about the producer:Luis Aníbal Calderón is one of the finest producers we work with at Cofinet. Luis is a 2nd generation coffee farmer and has been working in this field for over 40 years now. But it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Luis.Back in 2011, Luis was at serious risk of losing his farm to the bank. At that point, he was mainly selling his coffee on the C-market and the price he was receiving was barely enough to cover the cost of production, let alone repay the loan he had taken out to purchase land to extend the size of his coffee farm. It was at this point Luis approached his local town’s Specialty Coffee Association. They were willing to pay 15% above the C-price, not enough to truly reward Luis for the extra effort required to produce specialty grade coffee but enough to sustain Luis and drive him to explore this avenue of the industry further. As a result, in 2012 he planted 5,000 Gesha trees and after waiting an arduous three years for the trees to bear fruit, Luis was converted. In 2015, Luis decided to embark on the mission to convert his entire farm to exotic coffee varieties. Now, more than five years since that decision, Luis’s farm Finca Villa Betulia is a beacon for specialty coffee production in Acevedo, Huila. On his farms you will find all sorts of exotic varieties including Red Gesha, Tabi, Red Bourbon, Yellow Bourbon, Java, Sidra, Striped Bourbon, Chilli Bourbon, Caturra, Typica, Maragogype, Pacamara, Marageisha, Pink Bourbon, Papayo, Caturron, Liberica, Variedad Colombia, Castillo, Red Leaf, Red Bourbon, Dwarf Gesha, Pink Gesha, Yellow Gesha, Wush Wush, Dwarf Yellow Bourbon, Mokka and Maracaturra.Luis, along with the assistance of Cofinet, has worked to improve his processing methods for high-end micro-lots. He is now a master in many processing methods such as Extended Fermentation, Honeys and Naturals.Nestled at 1,500 meters above sea level in the lush hills of Acevedo, Huila, Villa Betulia is more than a coffee farm—it's the heart and legacy of Luis Aníbal Calderón and his family. For over 30 years, Luis has nurtured the land alongside his wife and four children, transforming it into a sanctuary for some of Colombia’s most exquisite coffee varieties.Starting with the classic Castillo and Colombia strains, his passion evolved into a dedicated pursuit of specialty coffees. Over the past 15 years, Villa Betulia has blossomed into a thriving home for more than 30 varietals, including rare and celebrated names like Gesha, Papayo, Java, Yirgacheffe, and the vibrant Pink Bourbon. Each coffee cherry is carefully handpicked at peak ripeness, followed by meticulous floating and quality testing in the very laboratory his family built—ensuring every bean reflects their commitment to excellence.Luis is not only a respected coffee producer in Huila but also a passionate community leader. Through Villa Betulia, he has inspired neighbors and relatives alike to embrace specialty coffee, fostering a ripple effect of quality and pride across the region.
