Tastes Like Red Berries • Roasted Almonds MOK's Take: Central America or Colombia, the best of both worlds, higher acidity than the Brazil (B), with fuller body than the African (A). Grown at 1,600 m around the village of Palmor, on the slopes of Pico Colón, this lot comes from Kogui and local farming families united in the AGROSEC cooperative in the department of Magdalena. Here, between the Caribbean Sea and the Ciénaga Grande wetlands, coffee is cultivated in small plots surrounded by rich biodiversity on clay, acidic soils that demand careful, patient work. For the Koguis and Arhuacos, the Sierra Nevada is “The Heart of the World”, a living mountain whose rivers and snowy peaks sustain life far beyond Colombia. Spiritual leaders, the Mamos, guide the communities to farm and protect the land in harmony, and the coffee here is grown 100% organically, using sun-drying, simple fermentation and traditional methods that privilege purity over maximal complexity. After decades marked by narcotraffic and conflict, AGROSEC now gathers around 110 families who see coffee as a path to peace, dignity and a future that honours their heritage. This washed Castillo and Caturra lot reflects that vision: a clean, honest profile that lets the Sierra’s character speak, and offers a glimpse of a region quietly working to become a new reference point for Colombian specialty coffee.
